DJ David Munoz – La Mamboteca Playlist

Click here for DJ David Munoz’ Playlist

I am very proud of creating a Playlist for elWatusi. This selection of salsa music is just a brief example of my activity as DJ. It is a composition of Salsa Dura, Guaguanco and Chachachá, music with Swing, with Tumbao, with roots. My aim is not to impress people but to share the very best of salsa music and to spread our musical heritage all over the world! Because i don’t just love Salsa, I LIVE it! Muchas gracias y Que Viva La Salsa (DURA) !!!

I was born in Mexico City in 1977 and I have been collecting salsa music for about 18 years. I love classic salsa from the 60s and 70s, romantic salsa from the ’80s and ’90s and, of course, also modern salsa, for example La Excelencia, Spanish Harlem Orchestra and La Sucursal S.A., to name but a few. In Mexico, I danced in shows with well-known dancing groups (De Dónde Nace El Rítmo, Salsa Caliente) and I gave salsa lessons in different places, for example at the national university Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where I followed my studies of economics. Since 2003, I have lived in Munich, Germany and step by step, investing a lot of energy, work and passion, I slowly paved my way to become a salsa DJ.

Today, I’m a full-time DJ and I work 3 times a week in Munich, 2 times a month in Nurnberg (Germany) and 2 times a month in Innsbruck (Austria). I’m the official DJ of the Austrian Salsa Congress (www.SalsaCongress.at) and I was invited several times to events, congresses and festivals to Berlin, Augsburg (Germany), Darmstadt (Germany) and, of course, Munich as well as to Bologna and Milan in Italy.

I also organize 2 salsa events in Munich once a month, Latinosphär DeLuxe and Palladium Night (www.Palladium-Night.de), and I created a web-page (www.LaMamboteca.de) where I publish 25 salsa songs every month describing the music, history and biography of a selected “Artist of the Month” to familiarize my friends and all the passionate lovers of salsa music.

Artist Mini Bio – Charanga De La 4

elWatusi @ 11:48 pm

Roberto Torres produced five Charanga De La 4 albums for SAR in New York before he took the label to Miami in the mid-’80s. From the outset Charanga De La 4 was characterised by the anonymity of its musicians, and only the arrangers and/or director were ever credited. The first six Charanga De La 4 vinyl albums only contained four extended tracks each, with cuts ranging in length from just under six minutes to over 11 minutes. The "best of" compilation Lo Mejor De La Charanga De La 4 issued in 1989 collects seven tracks from four of the New York albums released between 1979 and 1983 and one from the first of four Miami productions to date issued between 1986 and 1997. The material from the New York period is undoubtedly superior. If salsa heaven has a soundtrack, Charanga De La 4 are certain to figure prominently. – John Child

Artist Mini Bio – Monguito “El Unico”

elWatusi @ 11:09 pm

After arriving from Cuba (via Mexico), the Afro-Cuban sonero Monguito (Ramón Quian, died: 2006) made his New York album debut on 1963’s Primitivo on Roost singing lead vocals with the conjunto of the legendary Arsenio Rodríguez. He went on to work with the likes of Johnny Pacheco’s Nuevo Tumbao, Herbie Mann, Tico All-Stars and Larry Harlow before making four solo albums on Fania between 1967 and 1971. After a period of low output during the ’70s, he made a major comeback in 1979 with Yo No Soy Mentiroso, the second release to come out of the newly formed SAR stable. This album marked the beginning of a highly productive five year period during which he worked on various productions for the Ivory Coast based Sacodis label and the SAR sister label Toboga. He toured Africa in 1980, where Abidjan’s Minister of Agriculture presented him with a gold disc for sales of his Sacodis debut From Africa To Cuba. After an eight-year hiatus, he revisited his SAR / Sacodis sound in 1993 with El Padrino Del Son Montuno on Manguito and returned to SAR in 1995 for his final release Sazonando. Various compilations have been issued. – John Child
